What to Expect at a Veterinary Specialist Visit

by Rebecca Saunders, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology)

Although each type of veterinary specialist appointment varies, the same basic process will apply.

Upon arrival, either the specialist, a technician or a veterinary student will ask you questions about your pet’s history including current medications, previous tests performed by your primary care vet, how your pet is behaving at home and whether their condition has remained stable, improved or worsened over time.

The specialist will outline the diagnostic tests they would like to perform to learn more about your pet’s condition and help guide treatment recommendations. An estimate is often provided at this time so you have an idea of the expected cost at the end of the workup.

After the diagnostic tests are performed, the specialist will go through their findings with you and recommend any additional tests and/or treatment that is appropriate. They will also discuss symptoms to monitor for at home as well as when they would like to recheck your pet.

Specialists often send their final reports to your primary veterinarian so they are kept updated on test results and any new medications that may have been started. This way, your primary care vet, your pet’s specialists and you are on the same page and able to move forward as a team to manage your pet’s condition and provide the best quality of life for as long as possible.
